Nanny 911: Getting Baby to Eat at Mealtimes

I have a problem with getting my 10-month-old son to eat. When it comes time to eat, he wants to play and won't sit down. He will throw a tantrum when I put him in his high chair, and won't stop till he gets out. It scares me that he might be undernourished or even develop an eating disorder in the future.

Make sure your son is on a good schedule so he is not too tired when it comes to mealtime, and he is not already full from juice, milk or a snack. Make transitions smooth, allow plenty of time for cleanup, and make it a game or sing a song. Little ones this age respond well to songs and games—it should be fun! Try getting a dolly or teddy near the highchair and have a conversation with teddy or dolly like, "Yumm, teddy loves his broccoli. Oh, you want another bite teddy?!" Don't start getting into food battles or it will become an issue!
