how old were your kids when they found out that meat comes from animals?

Today one of my 3-year-olds was talking to another adult, asking her if she eats eggs and chicken, and then he said, "I eat chicken. But just regular chicken; not animal chickens!" It made me laugh. :) But also made me curious when you told your kids where their meat comes from and how did they react? He LOVES animals so I wonder if he'll freak out.

I think C is too young to understand where meat comes from. I on the other hand am a vegetarian. I grew up eating meat, but it's not something that I prefer. I am all for saving the animals, but I also just don't want to eat meat. C hates meat and won't eat it. Whether it's chicken, fish, steak, whatever she won't eat it. It's easy on me because I don't have to buy meat then. Instead we supplement with Boca meat and other vegetarian "meats." We both eat eggs, but we take out the yolk since it's just cholesterol anyways.

Well, I have never eaten meat, ever. My parents are both vegetarians so me and my 10 siblings were also brought up as vegetarians and most of us still are now. My husband on the other hand is a big meat eater and so at meal times, it kind of hard! Anyway, he wants Autumn to be a meat eater like him but I want her to just have chicken. I know that a meat/poultry but I just feel that eating meat is not right, in my opinion.

Should I let Autumn eat meat?

That's tough, and such a personal decision. I think you need to do what you think is right. Hopefully you and your husband can come to an agreement you're both comfortable with.

My husband has started telling them that but i don't think they get it yet.  I know Bella does not get it at all and Jack rarely eats any meat

Glad your little one figured it out without a big deal! :)

Our kids figured it out chicken pretty easily since they have the same name as the animal. I think we basically just let them know if they ever asked. I still get questions from my 10 year old on occasion about what animal he is eating while eating sausage, bacon, etc.

Well, it turns out that he knows after all! Today he was eating a chicken nugget and said, "This chicken nugget has chicken in it."

"That's right! Where does the chicken come from?"

"Where does it come from, Mommy?"

"Where do you think it comes from, Alex?"

"It comes from animal chickens."

My girl was about 2.5 and she wanted some beef cold cut, and she asked what it was. I told her it was beef, and she asked "what's beef?" I told her it was cow meat. Her eyes got really really big "COWS?? I'm Eating a COW??? COWS ARE YUMMY MOMMY!!!" I also taught her that ham and bacon are from pigs and chicken was from chicken. She now sees pictures of animals and tells me Cows are beef and they are yummy, pigs are bacon and bacon is yummy.

So one day she was sitting and watching the show "olivia the pig" and I asked what she was watching. She said "I'm watching the bacon show mommy"

LOL I think I have a little carnivore on my hands.

My girls are big animal lovers!!! We love cows, pigs, chickens, and fishies but they know we eat them too. I don't know how they found out but I'm assuming it was just daddy that points out things like "Look Soph, that's a chicken, what we had for lunch today" when they see a live chicken on TV or such. No big deal for the older girls. Just saying things like that and they catch on. Of course they don't know how they're killed I guess but they know we eat the cute cows that we see on big fields.

My child will not eat meat unless it is hidden pretty well. The exception is disgusting, overprocessed "meat" like hotdogs or nuggets. She knows that it comes from animals but for a long time she thought it was different than real animals. It was only recently that she made the connection, she is four. She saw a fish in a store and was a lightbulb moment, lol.

We do not eat mammals for the most part so I guess we avoid the freakout that would come with eating things that are cute. I think it depends on the kid. Some are pretty matter of fact about it and some refuse to eat it when they figure it out.

My daughter is 3 and she knows where all meat comes from. We raise chickens so she gets that we will have chickens for eggs and chicken for eating. She was not upset about it when she found out as long as she understood that some animals are not for eating!!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and has no idea where the meat comes from!  I don't know, maybe when she actually asks me where we get it from I'll tell her!  She hasn't been interested in knowing yet!  She'll probably learn that in school though!
