Summer Camp crisis!
I'm the one in crisis! My 11 year old has been to summer camp for 10 days for the past two summers, well this year she really wanted to go to a month long one with 2 friends. I talked to those parents and both of them have older kids who have gone to it. They said it was awesome so we agreed and she's going! Has anyone else had their kids go to summer camp this long?

The other parents who have had kids go to that camp said that their kids took an iPad, they have wifi in the rooms. Also she has a lock which she can put on her closet(the kind you put a combination on) I'm not going to be waiting for her call all day long, neither do I expect her to call me but I want her to feel like she can. She will be having too much fun to be thinking about calling mom later, I just want her to be able to.
Oh, then in that case let her bring it! I didnt want her to be penalized (sp?) for bringing it if other kids didn't have one.

I haven't but I would be freaking out too....I am sure she will be fine and will have a great time, but it would be hard to let her go for that long....hugs!

I'm wayyy more nervous than she is, of course I don't let her see that. It's in California and we can communicate by mail(NOT email) and I can send 1 care package per week. I can call or she can but only for emergencies so let's hope not. I'm letting her take her ipad just in case she wants to skype or email... Has anyone been to this camp? It's called Catalina Island Camp
If I were you, I wouldn't let her take the iPad. What happens if it gets stolen or broken? Plus, you might make it harder for her to enjoy herself if she's always thinking in the back of her head "Oh, well after this activity, I'm gonna go Skype mom because I can" ...just saying. Is the camp allowing other kids to bring electronics? If they're only allowing you to contact her by snail mail, what makes you think that she'll be allowed to bring an iPad? lol.

There are lots of kids who go to sleepaway camps for longer than 10 days. You're not being a bad parent by "sending them away" to camp.
You can usually visit, communicate regularly, send care packages, and also just let them start their natural individuation with your blessing.
If you live in North Carolina, there are lots day camps and residential camps to choose from! You can start here if you're looking for a summer camp near:
Asheville, Cary, Charlotte, Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Kernersville, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Wilmington.

I never went to camp longer than a week, but my parents had 4 kids and couldn't have afforded more than that! (There were a couple summers I did two different week-long camps.) Sounds like a great opportunity but I'm sure as the parent I'd have a hard time getting used to my kid being gone that long! Hope it goes well!

When I was about 13, I went to summer camp for a month and it was the BEST. I went alone tho and didn't have friends with me so if your daughter has 2 friends to go with her, that's awesome. Going to sleepaway camp really makes you a better kid- it's a great summer and you learn a lot of independence by being away from home. She'll absolutely love it, get your wallet ready for next year cus she'll be ready to go back, lol!
