New activity for my son
My son has been taking Taekwondo for about 2 1/2 years and his interest has been getting less and less in the past couple of months. He is not super athletic (he is my more intellectual child) so the fact that he was into it was so big for us....it has also helped with his self-esteem, balance and coordination. So needless to say I am a little upset about it, although he doesn't know that. He says that he just wants to take a break so maybe he will go back to it, but I want him to find something else in the meantime. I would like him to do something active and am trying to think of something but not sure what. Any ideas?

Well i am happy to report that after he thought about it for 2 days we revisited the decision and he said that he must have been tired that day and he couldn't quit taekwondo because it was "who he is." Too cute...he is glad to be back and with school starting we will be in more of a routine with it so I think that will help him with going twice a week.

I like the ideas of trying swimming, tennis, maybe music lessons, art classes, Boy Scouts, or something like Lego robotics? I have a few friends whose kids are really into that.

Sometimes for kids who aren't super athletic individual sports where they are still around other kids are best. Maybe swim team or gymnastics? Tennis? My non-athletic brother also liked riding his bike. A wii might be a fun way for an intellectual kid to get more active too.

Are there any theater groups for kids in your area? Theater is more active than you would think.
There are also different sorts of dance classes other than ballet if that might interest him.
Tennis, competitve swimming or diving, I think soccer is coming into season.
Our state park hosts nature classes for children, they go on a hike a couple times a week and learn about conservation and wildlife.
Our community center does Yoga classes for children, My daughter's old preschool did them as well, I guess kids love yoga, it was one of the favorite activities.

We're going to sign up our daughter (5 years old) for rock climbing classes at a local rock climbing gym. They don't go out on real rocks or anything- but work on techniques and safety on the rock walls. We've had her in gymnastics, ballet, and soccer- and gymnastics was the best for her. I think part of it has to do with the thoughtfulness of gymnastics- practicing the moves, thinking steps through, etc. She spent the entire two soccer seasons picking daisies and playing with her friends. I think rock climbing will be a good one for her because it's not a lot of running back and forth, there's not a lot of time for distraction, and I think she'll enjoy the thoughtfulness required to climb.
