Gift ideas for 4-year-olds?
My boys turn 4 a few weeks after Christmas so I'm trying to come up with Christmas and birthday gift ideas. I have a short list but I'm sure there are things I'm not thinking of that they might be ready for/start to get into over the next year as they move past the younger-preschooler toys. Any suggestions? What do your 4- to 5-year-olds love to play with? So far I'm getting them some more dress-up stuff, an Imaginext Bat Cave for Will, a Cars light-up tracing desk for Alex and a few small things for each boy. I probably have enough for Christmas but nothing for their birthday. ;)

I love the sleeping bag idea! And Twister would be fun too; are they big enough for that?
My girls are 4 and 3 and they love it!

Here are a few more ideas. Sorry for repeats or if they are things you already have.Lego table
Train table
Games like Candyland, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Twister
Puzzles
Remote controlled cars/trucks
Easel with chalk/dry erase markers
Craft stuff (papers/stickers/pencils/markers/foam sets/etc)
Scooters
Sleeping bags (you could go "camping" in your living room with them)
Musical items (get one a child's guitar and the other a child's drum set--and maybe a microphone for each?)

Thanks for the ideas! They do already have, and love, a bunch of those (play kitchen, doctor kit, etc.) but you all gave me some more inspiration for my list. Thanks!

Balance bikes. My daughter got her balance bike when she was 3 and by the end of summer she was ready to ride a pedal bike, my 2 yr old got a new one for his bday (my daughter's old one was too big) he's already coasting down hills on it. Balance bikes are a precursor to pedal bikes and help your kid learn to balance before you move to a padal bike. It took Sequoia three days on a pedal bike with training wheels (to learn how to pedal) and two 5-10 minute sessions to figure out how to ride it. Kids LOVE them. My daughter had a kazam, it worked well and a cousin and a friend borrowed it to learn to ride themselves before we sold it back to the shop we got it from for a discount on my son's new bike. My son rides a kinderbike mini. Its the only balance bike I could find that fit him, a plus to it though is that it has a back brake (something my daughter really needed on her balance bike once she got good at it). Kinderbike also has a model called the Morph that starts as a balance bike that you can add pedals to when your kid has the balance thing down. It wasn't an option for me, due to Xander being so young (and a bit on the short side). Check 'em out www.kinderbikeusa.com.

For a diy shop, I love this one! They have a few on Ikea hacks but this one is probably my favorite.

A play cash register and/or store? In my daughters pre-k (ages3.5-5) they are doing a shops unit and the kids love it. They made the shops and things in the shops out of boxes and other household stuff, it should be easy to find a tutorial for some sort of shop if you do the homemade gift thing. They sell different types if you don't. I think I saw some at lakeshore learning. I know they had cash registers there.
They did a home unit earlier and all the kids loved the kitchen(again, homemade) so I like the idea of play kitchens though I know a lot of boys would not like it because of the association with it being a girl toy.
Any toy for roleplaying or pretend play is good for this age.
A teepee or tent? All the kids always love playing in my daughter's when they come over.
Construction kits. I love the ones that the kids can use tools to build things and the ones that have connectors to use household stuff to build larger things like forts but my daughter likes the basic Knex and lego type.
Beginner board games. I am surprised how much the kids love playing them. They can spend quite a long time playing a bingo type game and be perfectly entertained. Teaches being good winners and losers as well plus the whole fairness and taking turns thing.
Anything dinosaur. Most kids that age seem to love them. There is a tutorial to make your own fossil excavation kit online. I think it was basically sand and plaster mixed with the toys inside. Kids love to dig out their own fossils. It is fun but it is a one time activity then that is it. We did use little toy dinos so she had them to play with after.
For a small gift that everyone seems to love, pig poppers. I don't know why it is so much fun to squeeze that pig but we love the pig poppers! Well, everyone except the dog loves them.
