Confessions of a PTA Member

Submitted by Mrs_Fire
I admit that when I was a working mom, I didn't even attempt to join the PTA. Which is not to say I wasn't involved. I did send cookies and such for school parties and even helped chaperon a field trip to the zoo. But when we got redistricted and had a "fresh start" at a brand-new school that coincided with me being a stay-at-home mom, I joined the PTA. I mean it's a great opportunity to build community bonds and make some new friends, right? Well sure it is ... kind of.
I think my neighbor was right when she said, "You get a group of women together and there's gonna be some drama." And boy we've had some drama alright! From fights between the PTA president and vice president to the cliquishness of it all. Some passive-aggressive moves have even been made towards me when everyone was too "busy" to contact me or return their paperwork for the state convention. Someone finally contacted me one month later and one week before the paperwork was due!
Sometimes between the drama and dragging my son around to help the PTA, I wonder what I've gotten myself into. Don't get me wrong: The PTA itself is a great organization. I love helping the school and seeing all the kids' smiling faces and forming relationships with the teachers and principal, so I guess it's worth it.
Or is it? What do you parents think? Have you had PTA drama before? How did you handle it? Share in the comments below!
