How can I convince my struggling middle schooler to let me help her with homework?
In most cases, it's simply not realistic to expect parents and adolescents to be able to tackle homework together. An adolescent's self-esteem is too fragile, and the parent-child relationship is too emotion-charged to accomplish much as a team. Even the most diplomatic mom or dad is likely to meet with failure in this regard. I'd suggest hiring a professional tutor to help. Another option would be to find a teenager in the neighborhood who's a good student and pay him or her to help your child a few times a week after school.
