My 16-year-old just will NOT STOP TALKING. She talks from morning 'til night. She talks about EVERYTHING, or should I say ANYTHING. Her friends. Her clothes. Her favorite music. The weather. ANYTHING.
She's a lovely girl, really. She's sweet and funny. She gets good grades. I don't have any other big complaints about her. How could I? But OH. MY. GOD. She will not STOP.
We communicate pretty well so I tried talking to her about it. At first she denied that she talked too much. I told her I would record like an hour—just an hour!—of her without editing or skipping, and then she could hear for herself. She didn't like that idea, and I know she tried to cut herself off for a little while after that. A LITTLE while. But I guess the temptation is just too great. She went back to jibber-jabbering in two hours.
I have actually had complaints about it from her teachers at school. She has even gotten detention for it, and I have heard her friends make fun of her because she just gets going and cannot stop. I guess it's a nervous habit, but it's not like she doesn't have friends or is insecure or anything. She's a pretty normal girl, really, except for this ONE THING.
Maybe she will grow out of it. I sure hope so. Her dad and me are talkers, sure, but not like this, so I think it's more "her" than "us." But maybe I should take her to a counselor or buy a book or something. It's like the opposite of those How to Get Your Teenager to Talk to You books. In my case, it's How to Get Your Kid to Shut Up!
