Getting Teens to Clean Their Rooms
How can I motivate my messy teen to clean up his room?
In general, I think kids have the right to keep their rooms any way they want. However, when it begins to affect the rest of the household, such as smells or bacteria, then it becomes the parents' concern. At that point, motivation to clean up should be tied to whatever your child values: time on the phone, an iPod, use of the car, money, etc. Taking away things kids value can be a valuable tool for motivating and teaching responsibility.
