My teen daughter has the most annoying habit. She refuses to finish everything on her plate. Don't get me wrong, she eats and maintains a healthy weight. All of her other eating habits are pretty normal, but she just does this one thing ... and it drives me crazy!
No matter what she's eating or how much she likes it, she inevitably throws away the last quarter of it. She seems to actually serve herself more than what she'll want to eat, just so she can throw away that last part. I've even started asking her, "Can you really eat all that?" Of course she glares at me and says yes. But then she doesn't, and into the trash it goes.
I don't know how she picked up this habit or why she does it. I keep thinking that it might be an early symptom of a kids' eating disorder, but as I said, there aren't any other signs. I suspect it makes her feel like she's eating less if she has something left to throw away. I'm always nagging her not to be so wasteful, but she usually laughs it off and says her eyes are bigger than her stomach. I want her to understand how much this bothers me, but I'm not sure exactly how to approach it. If it is in any way related to some kind of eating disorder, I don't want to say the wrong thing.
