Clare Kramer: "Adapter" Parenting Style

Submitted by Clare Kramer
Even before Gavin was born, my husband, Brian, and I knew how we wanted to raise her: by letting her lead the way. It's not just about Brian and me anymore—it's about all three of us. We're all in it together.
Brian is super-laid-back and super-easygoing—he pretty much never gets worked up about anything. He's been the biggest key to my easygoing parenting style.
We've never had a naptime for Gavin. We've never had a bedtime for Gavin. We just aren't interested in enforcing all of that structure on her. It's important to us to create a world for our daughter where she doesn't have to worry or be stressed out about taking naps or eating foods or doing anything at a certain time of the day. We really feel that if we listen to her and let her lead the way, she'll be happier, more easygoing and more adventuresome in the years to come.
In our day-to-day life, Brian and I are laid-back in our relationship. Everyone eats when they're hungry. We may eat at the table, we may eat in front of the TV, or we may eat in front of the computer. We don't see those things as taboo and we're not worried and stressed about the negative ramifications that people might associate with this sort of lifestyle. We're confident that we're living our lives the right way and raising Gavin the right way, because we believe in what we're doing. It's who we are.
Besides being a mom, Clare Kramer is best known as Glory on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
