Some of my kids' friends have MySpace pages that seem inappropriate. Should I bring it up with their parents?
It is very disturbing to see what's out there in cyberspace. However, reporting teen behavior to another parent could severely impact your relationship with your kids, and your kids could be marked as people not to be trusted.
I strongly advise parents to save such intervention for concerns regarding physical safety. MySpace, as repugnant as it may be, is an avenue where teens can experiment with self-expression, take on different personas and act out vicariously. If you are concerned about your kids' exposure, that is another story. You may want to talk with them and let them explain their perspectives on MySpace. And if you are truly uncomfortable with certain sites, there are ways to block access.
Remember that teens need to be honing their abilities to make good decisions, problem-solve and develop social relationships. If your kids are not displaying any outward effects/changes in behavior as a result of their being on MySpace, then I would suggest letting it be. And, please, please, do not try to view your children's sites without their knowledge and approval. That's like reading their diaries or snooping into their rooms and personal possessions. Give them their space and privacy.
