Single Mom Parenting Multiple Kids

I am a single mother of two boys that I have raised by myself. They are my world. But sometimes I feel like I am not doing right by them.
Discipling doesn't always work. I can fight with my boys for hours to make them sit in time-out. My oldest son goes through tantrums, and when I put him in time-out, it doesn't defuse him but he gets madder and madder. When I take toys and privileges away, he gets worse and worse.
I'm having trouble handling tantrums and biting and throwing. I want them to stop but they are getting worse. Please, does anyone have any advice that might help me?
