Nanny 911: Keep Kids From Lying and Disobeying
I have three boys, ages 2 months, 3 and 5, who will flat out lie to my face or totally ignore what I've told them. They'll ask if they can have something or do something and if I tell them no, they will say OK, turn around and walk away, and five minutes later I will find them doing exactly what I just told them not to do. How do I stop this?
You have to say what you mean and mean what you say, and this goes hand in hand with one warning–one consequence. You have to follow through with discipline, such as a time-out.
So for the 5-year-old, a five-minute time-out, and for the 3-year-old, three minutes. After the time-out, you have to reinforce why you put them in a time-out and remind them that if they don't do what you have asked of them, they will be put in a time-out again. Again, your mantra needs to be one warning–one consequence.
