Dealing With Toddlers' and Preschoolers' Regressive Behavior
Learn how to deal with regressive behavior in your toddler or preschooler.
Your toddler or preschooler is suddenly acting like the baby you once knew ... and not in a good way. Take these tips to help you tackle this tricky parenting situation:
report abuse- What's causing the behavior? Try to determine if something in your child's life has changed recently to trigger the regression. A new sibling? A stressful life event? Regressive behavior can often be an indication that your kid's craving attention.
- How are you handling it? Do your best to refrain from yelling at your kid or pulling the "act your age" card. The path to growing up is often full of these little backtracks, so try to see the regression as more of a developmental phase than a true road back to babyhood.
- Can you make being a big kid seem attractive? Sell your kid on all the positives of being a big kid—going to school, riding a bike, going to birthday parties, etc. If you make being big seem like a total bonus, the quicker your kid may give up on the baby bit.
