Nanny 911: Getting Kids to Stay in a Time-Out

How can I get my 3- and 6-year-old boys to take their time-outs seriously? I try to put them in a place away from the other children, but it is very difficult as our house is so open. So they are placed in our only hallway, which is the direct path to all the bedrooms and bathrooms, where they will sit and bang on the wall, sing or try to talk with the other kids. What can I do?

If they stay in the time-out, then singing, talking, etc., is fine. Just ignore any talking—don't respond to anything, and stay calm. The purpose of a time-out is to give everyone the space they need to stop their immediate behavior and calm down.

Six-year-olds really need consequences in addition to a time-out, such as removal of a privilege. Remember to also pick your battles wisely!
