Encouraging Free Play in Children

We're strong believers in letting kids just play, but we don't live in an area where they can just go outside. What are some ways to encourage free play under these circumstances?

If the area in which you live is not conducive to outside play, then find a park, open field, etc. where your children can play freely and make it a weekly (or more frequent) commitment. You can either just let them go and play with any other children there or plan to take/meet a friend. Bring bikes, scooters, etc. and let your kids enjoy the outdoors. Also, if your children have a particular interest, such as skateboarding or playing with their pets, look for the skateboard or dog park where they can pursue their activities. You might want to make it a family affair, since parents can use some time outdoors too … and what a great way to bond with your kids!
