Puzzled by Preschool Learning
Submitted by mamaluv
I hate preschools in New York City. We just had our PTA meeting for my 3-year-old daughter last week, and the teacher told me that maybe I should STOP doing puzzles with my daughter and start doing more "free-play" types of things. She also wrote "Gabrielle is a happy and pleasant CHILD" on her "evaluation" (with the word "child" actually underlined). Since when should I be chastised for doing PUZZLES with my daughter? It's not like I do SAT drills with her! We play make-believe, dress-up, Dora & Diego (she's always Dora, I'm always Diego), AND we do puzzles, count objects, talk about the fact that all mammals have fur, and that red and yellow make orange.
Am I a bad parent for teaching my child a full range of stuff and letting her choose what she likes? I'm tired of this system of creating "perfect children" that big-city preschool learning has become ... maybe I don't WANT "feedback" on my 3-year-old UNLESS she's hitting, poking, stomping, spitting or otherwise being unruly or disruptive. Otherwise, just let my child BE!
