Handling a Toddler Who Ignores Discipline
I have a two-year-old daughter who just doesn't listen to us or respond to discipline. When we ask her to clean up her toys, she ignores us. When we are outside, she takes off and goes wherever she wants. We tell her it's dangerous and not to do it again, but she doesn't listen. How do we get through to a toddler? Potty training has also become a struggle, because she refuses to sit on the potty or even put on underwear. What do I do?
For the moment, if potty training has become a battle, I suggest you put it on hold, since it will become a bigger issue than it needs to be. Potty training should not take long and should be a positive experience for your toddler.
I did an episode of Nanny 911 where the kids were always running off, so look out for it—it is episode number 405, with the Valenti family. Also, with cleanup, the best way to introduce your toddler to a little discipline is to make it a game. Set a timer to see how many toys she can pick up before it goes off, or have a little mom vs. daughter race and let her win. You can even make it a sorting game or a counting game to challenge her knowledge or motor skills!
