My Toddler Gags During Temper Tantrums
When my 23 month-old son has a toddler temper tantrum, he starts to gag. I have tried using time-outs to discipline him over and over again. I have even tried to distract him while he is doing it by trying to get his mind on something else. He does stop, but only to do it the next time he doesn't get his way. How do I break him of this awful habit? HELP!
Basically, do not feed into his toddler temper tantrum. He wants attention, and he's getting it. You might think, Yes, but it is negative attention. You're right. Sometimes, toddlers are happy to get any kind of attention. So every time-out and every attempt to divert his attention merely feeds his temper tantrum. And it gives him a reason to carry on that way the next time, starting the cycle all over again.
If he gags to the point of vomiting, just clean it up and carry on as though nothing happened. Don't appear upset and don't comment on it—even to someone else on the phone, as he may hear you. He is getting attention for his behavior—however negative—and until that changes, he will carry on with doing it!
Granted, this means you have to be very strong and control your emotions. But you'll find that if you don't feed a toddler temper tantrum, he'll have fewer and fewer of them as time goes on. So hunker down and be strong!
