Dealing with Temper Tantrums
My 2-year-old daughter has become such a brat lately. She is the smartest kid, but when she doesn't get what she wants, she starts to cry uncontrollably. I don't know whether to ignore her or give her what she wants so she can stop crying. She also says "no" for everything. How do I handle situations like these? I also live with my parents and they always come to the rescue when I try to discipline her.
Don't give in to your daughter's tantrums, as that makes it something that works for her! It would be like me saying to you, "If you scream, kick and cry as loud as you can and embarrass me as much as you can, I will buy you that Prada handbag"! It is very important—no matter how embarrassing or how long the tantrum lasts—that you do not give her what she wants!
Take a few steps away and tell her, "OK, if you are behaving this way, we will talk when you are done." If the tantrum continues, you can periodically check in and just remind her to "let me know when you are done." In addition, make sure your parents work with you as a team! Talk to them about discipline and make sure you all agree on how to handle it. When you are disciplining her, they must not interfere and vice versa!!
