The smarty pants researchers at Stanford University say it takes a 15-month-old about a second to process a word—which is coincidentally about the same amount of time it takes your kid to pull every pot off the shelf in the kitchen! But by age 18 months that same child will be able to process that word before she's even finished saying it!
