Late Potty Training
My 5-year-old son still has problems with using the toilet. Eight times out 10, he will need to go but refuses. He'll sit behind a chair and cross his legs like he is trying to hold it. I've tried rewarding him and even taking things away. He will start kindergarten in the fall and I'm worried about him having accidents at school.
You need to be asking your son at regular intervals during the day if he needs to sit on the potty. You can encourage him to relax and go to the potty voluntarily by putting a basket of "special" toys in the bathroom that can only be played with when you are sitting on the potty, never at any other time. You can also offer a small treat like M&M's when he has "tried" to go to the bathroom. This seems to be a control issue with your son. This is not meant to be stressful. As hard as it is, you need to come at it with a refreshed attitude, or your son will pick up on your stress. Also, when he does have a mess in his pants, you should involve him in cleaning it up.
