Potty Training Autistic Children
I have an autistic 10-year-old (mental age about 4) who is not quite potty trained. He shows few signs when he needs to go, so I'm always late to get him to the bathroom. His doctor and I suspect low muscle tone problems, and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do on my own before trying to get a PT (Physical Therapist) or OT (Occupational Therapist) involved.
A lot of my mommy friends with austistic children also struggle with the same dilemma as you have had great success with the wonderful book Steps to Independence: Teaching Everyday Sills to Children with Special Needs by Bruce L. Baker and Alan J. Brightman. There is an excellent section on toilet training that you will find very helpful to your situation regarding muscle tone problems. Plus, purchasers of this book can download all the forms found in the book free of charge from the Brooks Publishing website. Bottoms Up!
