What's better than a craft project? A craft project that your child can wear and be adorable in when it's all done! Add some Frosty finishes to a plain white knit cap and your child will be a real head-turner.
- White knit beanie:You can buy one, or if you wield a mean knitting needle, knit your own.
- Hot-glue gun and fabric glue sticks:Remember, kids and hot glue don't mix, so make sure you do all the gluing.
- One white adult sock:You've probably got a little lonely mateless white sock knocking around somewhere. Have your kid take a look. (And get her to pair up any other matches she can find while she's at it!)
- One infant sock:Any color, but preferably not white. (Not that anything white survived your child's first year of life unstained.)
- Fiberfill stuffing or cotton balls
- Scissors
- Two big buttons and two small buttons
- Felt or ribbon
- Pipe cleaners
- Needle and thread
Set your supplies out on your work space (a.k.a., the dining room table).
Help your child cut a small hole in the top of the cap.
Coat the cut edges of the hole with glue from a hot-glue gun to keep them from fraying. Sort of like putting nail polish on your stockings when they get a run.
Have your child stuff the toe of the white sock with cotton stuffing or cotton balls to create a small "head" for the snowman. If she uses cotton balls, have her tease them apart a bit before using them as stuffing or they'll appear lumpy under the sock.
Pull the sock through the hole in the top of the hat to give the snowman a head. In other words, the beanie will be the snowman's body and the sock, the noggin.
A grown-up should secure the sock to the hat with the hot-glue gun. The fabric glue sticks will make it machine washable.
Get your kid to decorate her snowman. First, have her add the infant sock for a hat. She can scrunch it down onto the snowman's head like a beanie.
Help her sew the two small buttons on for eyes and the two big buttons onto the front of the cap or the chest of the snowman.
Next, have her cut a miniature scarf out of a piece of felt or ribbon and tie it around the snowman's head.
She can then make arms out of pipe cleaners. Have her twist one end into little stick-like fingers and push the other "arm" end through a hole in the beanie. Secure with hot glue. Now that's what we call the coolest cap in town!
