Denise Jonas' 5 Tips for Musical Kids
Of course we all think our kids are superstars, but what if that singing into the hairbrush mic or rockin' the toy guitar is actually real musical talent? We chatted with Denise Jonas, mom of the Jonas Brothers, who shared her early memories of frontman Nick's talent and offered these five musical tips for bringing up your own superstar kid.
Get in Tune with Your Kid's Talent
"I have so many early memories of Nick loving music," says Denise. "When he was very young, he used to say to his father,'Do you hear that?,' because he could hear music in his head; he could hear music everywhere. I think one of my earliest memories is when Nick was three years old, and we would wake up early in the morning because we could hear him singing." Pay attention to how your kid engages with music! It's definitely entertaining to watch them rock out, but also a great opportunity for you to encourage their musicality.
Surround Your Kids with Music Play tunes at home, go to a concert, take out recordings from the library ... find fun activities that will open your kid's world to music! "When I was pregnant with Nick, my husband and I were on a singing tour," says Denise. "I was singing every day so I guess he was listening to music very early on! When he was little, he was always around music and exposed to it a lot through my husband who's a musician. He would take Nick to different rehearsals and let him play around with instruments. And we saw that music was something Nick was really passionate about so we encouraged him even if it was letting him stand on the coffee table to sing."
Encourage Their Musical Interests "If your kids are interested in music, do what you can to provide musical opportunities for them," says Denise. "Encourage them to sing in the school choir, get them an instrument if they're interested—that's what we did with Nick. Look for every opportunity to support their interest and be open to people with experience that might be able to give advice about musical training."
Find a Musical Mentor "There have been so many people who have helped Nick along the way, but his father was really his mentor, the one who showed him that the world is filled with music," says Denise "All of the boys have said how much their father has influenced them. It's important to have a mentor to show you the way." And the mentor doesn't have to be YOU! A piano or voice teacher, a school music teacher or a church choir director can all help share their passion with your kid.
Teach Your Kid That There are No Limits "I love what I'm seeing Nick do now, growing as an artist and taking on new challenges," Denise says. "With all of our boys, we tried to tell them: 'Don't limit yourself and expect a lot,' and that's what they've all done. I know it's been rewarding for Nick to take on these new roles as a solo artist, songwriter and producer. I know he has so many gifts to give and it's exciting to see what he'll do next." So take a cue from this superstar mom: encourage your kids to dream big, work hard, and maybe someday they'll be the next big music superstar.
