Karyn Parsons: Adapter Parent

Submitted by Valle
We're not a regimented bunch—that's just not how we live our lives. My husband is a filmmaker and I'm a producer and an actor, so neither of us has a 9-to-5 schedule or any type of set routine. So having a creative lifestyle spills over to our parenting style. We're just kind of loosey-goosey.
I'm sure that schedules and routines make many people's lives much easier. For us? Not so much. It's just not who we are. We're more go-with-the-flow. Because we move around a lot—to New York, to Massachusetts, to L.A.-- whatever schedule or routine we may have gotten into gets disrupted anyway. It takes a lot to get us back to some semblance of order. Plus, we're not really enforcer-type people. We take everything as it comes and roll with it. We adapt.
When our kids have sleep issues or eating issues, we don't really jump to solve them right away. We see how they play out, and then try to figure out a way to adapt our lives to our situation. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't, but we deal. I know this type of parenting doesn't work for a lot of people (like a lot of my friends), but we're happy raising our kids this way.
You probably recognize Karyn Parsons as Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996). Since becoming a mom, Parsons has put acting on hold and created a company called Sweet Blackberry. Check it out!
