Spooktacular Kids' Halloween Party Ideas

by Danielle Medina

To throw a great Halloween party for young kids, it's important to make it fun and accessible and not too scary. You don't want it to be all freaky ghouls and goblins. Try to stick with less scary themes like cute ghosts and pumpkins and the kids will be able to relax and have fun without being spooked out.

Here are a few fang-tabulous Halloween Bash ideas!

  • Play fun Halloween-themed games! I love Pin the Face on the Jack-o'-Lantern because it's easy to do and so much fun to play. Just cut a pumpkin shape out of orange poster board and draw a mouth. Then cut shapes from construction paper for the eyes and nose. Blindfold and spin your party guests and see who can land the eyes and nose in the correct spot. Another fun Halloween game: play Hot Potato with a small pumpkin!
  • Set up cool crafts that double as take-home favors! Wrap cans of Play-Doh with construction paper. Then let the kids glue on googly eyes, paper arms, cotton balls for hair etc. to create their own little "monsters." You can also do this with juice boxes: wrap 'em in green construction paper and let the kids decorate them to make Frankensteins.
  • Make your own costume photo booth! Gather a big pile of dress-up clothes for the kids to put on and set aside a "photo booth" area to snap pictures of them in different costumes. Not only is this a fun activity, but it's great to send photos to guests after the party as a thank you note or little favor. If you have a home printer you can even print them up and send them home as a favor on party day!
  • Serve Halloween treats that aren't too sweet! Kids get so much candy on Halloween, it's nice to serve something that isn't too sugary. Try making Mummy Pizzas! Spread sauce on bagels and cover them with strips of mozzarella cheese. Add two olives for eyes peeking out. Easy! You can also color popcorn orange, using either powdered food coloring or add liquid food coloring to water and toss it with popcorn in a bowl. Wrap handfuls of orange popcorn in plastic wrap so it's shaped like a ball and tie a green ribbon around the top to create instant Popcorn Pumpkins! The kids will think they're cool, and the moms will appreciate the sugar-free alternatives!
