Kristi Yamaguchi: Sometimes Bribery Does Get You Somewhere!

Once we went to Target to buy a birthday gift for my oldest daughter, Keara's, friend. As we were going up and down the toy aisles to find the present, Keara insisted on getting something for herself. She screamed and cried and threw a total fit. Well, of course, it's no fun to have your kid having a tantrum in the middle of a store with everyone watching, so I told her she'd get a present if she helped me with Emma (her baby sister) at home. This made her calm down and we continued to shop in peace. (I must say I was proud of myself that I didn't give in and buy her a present right then and there.)
For two weeks, Keara was a total angel. She helped me with Emma. She listened and was polite. It was wonderful! She must have really wanted that present! And I needed to make good on my promise, so I got her a nice surprise. After that, she was back to same old self again. I mean, she's a great kid, but for those two weeks she was really something special!
I know that bribery isn't the best ... but it really helps you out in some situations (especially when your kid is out of control!). I don't think it's OK for everyday parenting, but it's OK once in a while, right?
