Marissa Jaret Winokur: "Stabilizer" Parenting Style
Submitted by Paul
I think everyone would think I that I'm a Persuader, but I am definitely a Stabilizer. I do everything pretty much by the book. If a toy says it's for children 6 months or older, I sadly will wait until my son is 6 months old before I let him play with it. Seriously! I even paid someone to install the car seats properly for fear we would do it wrong. (And I've already been researching the best "next" car seat for two months now, so that when Zev outgrows the infant one, we'll know exactly which one to buy next!)
I wish I had a bubble for Zev to live in. When he was born, I didn't let people come over to meet him until he was 2 months old. I was so scared he would get sick! I didn't want people touching him with all of their germs. And even though I do ask my parent friends for advice on things, and I respect what they have to say, truthfully, whatever the doctor says is golden..
I am not a risk taker at all. That being said, at 4 months, I took him to Disneyland and cried in "It's a Small World." That was a huge day for us as a family—it was also the longest we'd been out of the house since he was born! Since then, I recently took a huge risk and uprooted everyone so I could work in New York during December and January. It was very hard for us to leave Los Angeles and go to cold New York City with a little baby, but I felt it was important to continue to grow and continue working. Happy parents breed happy children! But now that the job is over, I am so happy to be home. And honestly? I really do wish that I had that bubble for him!
Besides being a mom, Marissa Jaret Winokur is best known for her Tony Award-winning role in Broadway's Hairspray. She also appeared on season 6 of Dancing With the Stars.
