Mary Lynn Rajskub: "Adapter" Parenting Style
Submitted by Mary Lynn Rajskub
I'm an Adapter parent. I'm still relatively new to this parenting thing, so I'm still sort of figuring it out. My boyfriend and I are not big planners, and we're both pretty laid-back. So we figured we could just fit our baby into our lifestyle, no problem. Turns out, you do have to make some changes. This baby wasn't at all in our plans, and it was a different way to start a relationship. But I admit, it's pretty fantastic. Still, it took some getting used to.
I do stand-up comedy at night. So when Valentine was a few months old, I tried taking the baby with me to a couple of comedy shows. At first, I thought it was cool. He was so small and portable, and he slept through the whole set the first couple of nights. But then he started fussing. And crying. And it dawned on me, duh, he needs to be sleeping in his crib. He needs a proper bedtime. So I stopped taking him with me.
I've always been adaptable, because my life is pretty random, but now that I'm in my 30s, I realize I have to grow up. Motherhood is a trip. And it can really be touch-and-go. Because for the first few months, you realize you've never been responsible for anything in your life. A dog is a big responsibility, sure. But a human being? Nothing prepares you for that reality.
Besides being a mom, actress Mary Lynn Rajskub is best known as Chloe on 24.
