How do I teach my kid the value of money as something that can help others, not just himself?

This is a question of transmitting values, which is fundamentally about modeling. What are your five most important values? Many of us, even as adults, have never taken the time to name them. Consider all the ways in which you are modeling these values to your child. For example, does your child get as much positive feedback for being honest as he does for being entrepreneurial?

Look for opportunities to share your values with your child. Talk about the choices you make and why you are making them. Have you always made the right choices? Perhaps you could talk about a specific value each week at dinner and challenge your child to find examples of this value at work in his world.

The greatest balance to love of money is love of others. Your child may be interested in putting his creative energies to work to help someone in your community. Maybe he would enjoy starting his own unofficial nonprofit company which would donate all profits to an official nonprofit organization? Let him feel the esteem that comes from investing in people—feeding someone who is hungry, cheering someone who is sad. He'll get the hint and the value!
