Advice for Parents of Twins From 5 Minutes for Mom

We often say that if everyone in the world had a twin, the world would be a happier place. Having an identical twin sister is an incredible blessing and we could never imagine living without one another. We are a team—we work together, live two blocks apart and pretty much co-parent our children. However, the wonderful parts of life as a twin don't mean there aren't many challenges with being an identical twin—especially growing up!

Here is our advice for moms of twins:

  • Recognize the inner conflict twins face. While they have a deep love and intense loyalty to their twin sibling, they are also frustrated by their constant "ties" to them.
  • Create individual space for each twin. From sharing things like a room, toys and clothes to sharing friends to even sharing a reputation, twins get sick of each other and want their own space and identity.
  • Help them navigate playdates. Remember that for playdates, triangles are tricky and twins don't like it when a friend tries to exclude the other twin! Our mother would often explain "how to play with twins" to our playdates. LOL!
Yes, twins have a need for independence, but that doesn't diminish their deep bond and loyalty to one another. Twins have been together since the womb and that relationship is perhaps the strongest, most instinctive one they will ever experience.
