Family Travel: The Blessing of Missing a Plane
Submitted by Drewtoo
Remember "The Blessing of a Skinned Knee"? That book about raising self-reliant kids? This is not that story.
I must preface this by saying I was beyond sleep-deprived. It was a week when EVERY CHILD in the house—and hubby too—were all having sleep issues and waking me up to share their nightmares, insomnia, sleep apnea. I was *really* looking forward to our getaway—a week on a beach. I had scheduled a car to pick us up and bring us to the airport (a first). What I hadn't done was note the date on the calendar.
So it was quite a surprise when the doorbell rang at 5 AM and I stumbled downstairs to find the driver waiting to whisk us to our plane. I had it in my head that our vacation started on Saturday, not Friday! Bags were not packed. Dog was not kenneled. Children were not up. No way were we going to make that plane. And we didn't.
The good news is that we were able to catch a later flight. The blessing is that it makes a great story. And I now ALWAYS put things on the calendar.
