Make a Checklist for Family Travel Abroad

Traveling abroad on a cruise like Nickelodeon at Sea, exclusively on Norwegian Cruise Line, is fun for the whole family. But packing to go international is another story—passports and plane tickets and plug adaptors, oh my! Here's a handy-dandy checklist that'll make getting ready for your overseas adventure a breeze.

  • Passports—an absolute must for any port of call outside the U.S. Even if you have a ship's I.D. card, each member of your family must carry his or her own passport. Before you leave, check if you have to renew your passport (and give yourself about six months, just in case).
  • Your airline and cruise tickets—you can't board without them! Keep tickets in an easy-to-reach pocket in your carry-on bag.
  • Photocopies of passports, cruise ship itineraries and valuable documents like credit card information. Pack one copy in your carry on, one in your checked luggage and leave one copy with someone for safekeeping at home.
  • Proof of health insurance. Call your provider before you leave; they may cover you while abroad, and may even have in-network physicians in the countries you'll be visiting. If not, purchase travel insurance for each family member.
  • Proof of vaccinations. The CDC lists recommended vaccines for most travel destinations. You can also ask your travel agent which vaccines are recommended when you book your cruise.
  • Voltage power converter/plug adaptor. Make sure you can juice personal appliances in other countries.
  • An extra suitcase or collapsible bag. Be prepared to carry home all those souvenirs.
  • A wallet and small purse. Pack something small and easy to carry on day trips.
  • Credit cards. Don't forget to alert your credit card company that you will be traveling.
  • Contact numbers to report lost/stolen credit cards or traveler's checks.
