Big Easy Beignets

<!-- -->

Down in NoLa, folks like to have beignets and coffee for breakfast. Your kids will think fried dough for breakfast is about the best thing ever. But given that they'll be all loaded up on sugar so early in the morning, we'd recommend skipping the coffee. (For them, not you.)

  • 1 8-ounce package of crescent rolls
  • 1 cup powdered or granulated sugar
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1
    Heat 2 inches (in depth) of oil over medium-high heat in a large, heavy pan.
  • 2
    Unroll the crescent dough and pull the triangles apart on the dotted line. Cut each triangle in half to make two small triangles.
  • 3
    Gently place a few pieces of dough at a time into the hot oil. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally with a slotted spoon, until golden brown all over.
  • 4
    Remove beignets from oil and place on a plate covered with paper towels to drain.
  • 5
    Place one cup of sugar in a brown lunch bag and add a few beignets at a time. Close the top and shake the bag to cover the beignets in sugar. This is a good step for the kids to do!
  • 6
    Remove from the bag and serve warm.
  • For a little spice, toss some cinnamon into the bag with the sugar before shaking the beignets.
