  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour, plus 2 tbsp for dusting the pan
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 stick butter, softened
  • 1 egg, at room temperature
  • 1 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 multi-colored sprinkles, plus extra for the top of the cake
  • For the frosting:
  • 3 tbsp butter, softened
  • 3/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 to 4 tbsp milk
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8x8 pan with nonstick cooking spray, and dust lightly with 2 tbsp flour, tapping out the excess.
  • 2
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the milk, butter and vanilla, and beat for 3 minutes with a hand mixer until creamy.
  • 3
Here's the fun, Fourth of July part—stir in the sprinkles! As with many cake recipes, you'll want to treat the batter gently so your cake isn't too tough.
  • 4
Pour the batter into the pan and bake in the center of the oven for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • 5
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
  • 6
In a separate bowl, mix the butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar with a hand mixer until crumbly.
  • 7
Carefully add the milk a tablespoon at a time, until the consistency is smooth.
  • 8
Once the cake is cool, frost the cake and top with the extra sprinkles.
