Cooking Tips: Turn Cake Disasters into Clever Desserts

Submitted by alison
You're no Martha Stewart. Try as you might, for every perfect cake you make, you produce two lopsided ones that aren't fit for presentation. Don't let a little imperfection stop you from turning out a crowd-pleasing dessert! Try these cooking tips to save your cake: Trifle me. You can salvage your unattractive baked goods with a simple trifle recipe. Turn that Duncan Hines disaster into Sara Lee chic by cutting the cake into chunks and layering it with fruit and chocolate sauce, instant pudding or whipped cream in a pretty glass trifle dish.
Torte law. Repurpose your cake by crumbling the edible pieces into a bowl. Take out a loaf pan and line it with wax paper. Layer cake crumbs and softened ice cream three times. Freeze until ice cream has hardened, at least four hours. When ready to serve, let the loaf pan thaw for about 5 minutes, turn it upside down on a plate, peel off the wax paper and slice.
Cake cocktail. Here's a fun cocktail cooking tip! Divide the cake pieces between individual serving martini glasses or bowls. Drizzle the cake pieces in with a complimentary liqueur (chocolate with Kahlua, pound cake with limoncello, for instance). Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, top with whipped cream and serve.
Cake sandwiches. Use cookie cutters to cut two identical shapes out of a too-flat sheet cake. Place the bottom shapes on individual serving plates. Drizzle with hot fudge or caramel sauce, or spread on a layer of fruit preserves or Nutella. Add a layer of whipped cream or ice cream. Top with the second shape and dust with powdered sugar or cocoa.
