Irish Soda Bread

This popular Irish bread can accompany just about every meal in Ireland. Not unlike a pint of Guinness. We recommend bread for the kids. Bread and Guinness for you.
- 4 cups flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Add flour, sugar, salt and baking soda to a large bowl and mix well to blend.
Add softened butter and stir to incorporate the butter into the flour mixture.
Form a well in the flour and add egg and buttermilk.
Stir well to form a dough.
Place dough in a mound on a greased baking sheet and form into a rounded loaf shape.
Cut a large "X" in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife
Bake 45 minutes, or until golden brown and baked through.
Let cool slightly, slice and serve warm, or cool to room temperature, slice and serve.

- For sweeter bread, add a cup of raisins and an additional 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough.
