I have to ask this....can someone help me understand what is up with all the pirate stuff on nickjr.  I wouldn't think little kid shows need to educate our kids on pirates.   "Oh, they like to sing songs, swab the deck, talk funny....and you'll find out later they kill and steal".

Pirates and Easter - someone help me out.

I kind of get where you're coming from since they're just a romanticized subset of criminals ... but at the same time like pp's said, the way they're presented in kids' shows is innocent enough. I can understand why a parent wouldn't want their kid to think pirates are cool but ultimately I think it's NBD and not going to really negatively affect them.

Quoting JCWooster

1 - there is no killing in the cartoon

2 - they also teach counting, problem solving and team work

3 - Captain Hook is always "stealing" things from Jake, gets caught and has to return it to him. Lesson: stealing is not a good thing.

4 - it's a fantasy cartoon just like Thomas & Friends, (a talking train) Blue's Clues, (a grown man living with a blue dog and a salt & pepper shaker that have a child) Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (mice, ducks and cows that wear clothes and talk) and all of these programs have some kind of Easter special airing

If you don't agree with the content of a program, turn it off. There's cartoons I don't feel are appropriate so they are not viewed in my home.

you said it alot better than me.

I see no problem with pirates and kids. Its just like cowboys and indians or knights. Its all fun and fantasy. They don't need to know pirates are theives and the "heroes" of the west were committing genocide or the knights (or at least the knights templar) murdered people for not thinking like them.

jake and the neverland pirates is on Disney Jr.  but, i need to agree - children should not learn what pirates actually did - it is okay for them to live in the fantasy of sailing the seas, finding treasure and going on adventures.  why spoil a child with the reality of "dead men don't tell stories".
