Did you guys see this report? The AAP is now strongly discouraging home/recreational use of trampolines:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012/09/24/trampolines-too-dangerous-for-home-use-pediatricians-group-says-in-policy-statement/57835390/1

We recently bought a 55-inch one with enclosure. Maybe this refers more to the large ones; ours is for one person. One of my sons is in PT for gross motor delays and had OT for sensory issues, too, so for him the trampoline is therapeutic. I don't regret getting it but I know a lot of people who have them for therapy reasons and wonder if the AAP disapproves of that, too. :/ Thoughts? There's no doubt they cause a lot of injury but I wonder how much of that can be reduced with proper supervision, one jumper at a time, etc.

I think the small ones are fine but those big huge ones are dangerous. I wouldn't want one.

Also, I think you end up paying more in homeowners insurance if they find out you have one.

Some dad on Huffington Post Parent was just whining about how his daughter broke her arm on the monkey bars. Yes physical activity can be dangerous, but inactivity is even more so, the difference is when and how you pay. Healthy active kids are worth the risks involved, even if it means a broken bone or sprained something. Much better that than the alternative.

We have had one for 5 years with an enclosure that comes up to the net so they can't go near the springs, which would be my one concern really. We don't let more than 3 kids on at a time if they are little ones, or two if they are big. My youngest started going on when she was 10 months old. Noone, child or adult has had an accident. Thats not to say it doesn't happen as of course it does... but then I can't think of a single thing that someone hasn't been hurt by at some stage... my friend was walking up the steps the other day and steped funny... she broke her foot.... people fall down them all the time... are we going to ban them?

my sisters have both always had a trampoline, since the oldest kids were like 5 so that would be about 6 yrs now? the only injury sustained  (despite near daily use and b-day parties with 6 or sometimes more on their at a time) was a broken collar bone on my nephew when he was 5. it wasnt even the trampoline's fault :P his uncle was wreslting with him on the trampoline and he came down wrong. it wasnt even hard.

but really. EVERYTHING is a little dangerous. bikes, scooter, swing sets.  what always REALLY annoys me (dont take offense any one i'm just making a general statement about a socieital norm that bugs me) is how freaked out people get about things like this and stranger danger and germs but no one thinks twice before putting their kid in a car or getting in a car themsleves.

the stats on car injuries, esp for kids, is WAAAAAAY scarier than anything a trampoline can produce. around 260,000 kids die in a traffic accident each year and about TEN  MILLION are injured. that works out to about 700 A DAY. but no one would DARE say a car is too dangeorus for kids.

I think the obsession with safety and preventing any and all possible injury, no matter how minor, has gone way too far. Kids aren't allowed to do anything any more! Next I expect to hear that we shouldn't allow them outside or to move at all. We should just sit them in a bubble-packed suit, on a bunch of cushions, on the floor, in front of the TV with Barney on all day. Nothing threatening, no way to get hurt or upset, no one loses, no competition, nothing scary or challenging or controversial or fun at all.

Haha, love this! But no, oh wait, children can't watch the telly it's bad for their brain development! :)

My husband and I were just having the conversation about this (how kids practically can't do anything anymore because it's deemed "dangerous") the other night!

Scary to read that and the stats quite speak for themselves. I personally am petrified, every time I see a kid going up on that. So for me there's no question of ever getting it in the backyard. But I am sure you must have taken all the necessary precautions and more. I honestly wasn't aware of the therapeutic use it has.

I personally will never have a trampoline. I'm not a fan because I think they are too dangerous. I really have no clue on the p/t side, though. It sounds like you are at least taking all the safety measures.

I got hurt on a friend's a few times and so did others, and watching the clips on AFV are enough to scare me! lol  But I have a pool, and there are plenty of people who feel they are too dangerous. It's a personal preference. I think pools become less dangerous as your child ages, and trampolines become more dangerous. It's easy now to control your children on it and make them adhere to the rules, but a group of older kids or teens are going to take many more risks.
