There's no formula for a good marriage, but there are some basic traits that all healthy relationships require. If you want our relationship advice, you should work on these qualities:
- Truthfulness, faithfulness and trustworthiness: It's hard to have a healthy relationship when you can't trust each other. Being faithful to each other helps to build trust.
- Thoughtfulness and consideration: We know you're busy, but thoughtfulness really makes a difference in terms of maintaining a healthy relationship. So go ahead and put yourself in his shoes—and ask if he needs a foot rub!
- Supportiveness: Support each other when you're going through hard times—or when you want to improve yourself or try something new.
- Flexibility: You can't always expect to get your way. You should be able to talk things through without getting defensive. A healthy relationship requires that you listen to one another—and sometimes give in!
- Love and respect: Without love and respect, it's pretty difficult to have a healthy relationship. Of course, respect comes easier when you already love someone. It doesn't mean you always have to agree, but you at least have to respect each other's differences.
- Passion and romance: Let's be honest. Without regular sex, affection and a little romance, it's hard to keep the spark alive in a healthy relationship. Sure, it's hard to find time for romance between car-pooling and food shopping, but make time for each other—on a date night and in the bedroom—or your relationship will suffer.
