Friends, Politics & Religion

Some friends and I have polar-opposite opinions on politics and social values. Is it possible to maintain friendships among such differences?

Of course it is possible—especially if you are open to learning about their views and can see the validity in their opinions. If at least one of you is willing to question your own position and show genuine interest in the other's point of view, it actually can enrich your relationship. Otherwise, the relationship will develop areas that become taboo, and it will limit your friendship.

Also, recognizing these differences can help you appreciate the aspects that you have in common. You have choices in your relationships with your church friends: You can delight in what you have in common, tolerate or respect your differences, learn from the others' perspectives, and support each other in your religious life and spiritual development.
