My Kids Don't Eat Organic and I Don't Care

Submitted by Jillian Cartwright
I'm tired of feeling like a negligent parent because I let my kids eat Happy Meals every now and then. OK, once a week. My kids eat healthfully enough most days, but I've never gone out of my way to keep things like sugar or white bread out of their diets. And so far their health hasn't suffered.
I'll be the first to admit that things have gone seriously wrong with the care and feeding of America's children in recent years. But I believe kids cannot live on organic produce alone. I'm tired of carrying the guilt of non-organic macaroni and cheese and pork hot dogs (nitrates included) on my already burdened shoulders. So I don't feed my kids organic food! So what?
I'm not saying we should feed our kids Mickey D's three times a day. (I've seen Super Size Me. I get it.) I just don't think we should walk around with our heads hanging because we let the kids eat ice cream and cookies.
If you're the kind of parent who can stick to a stringent diet that is completely devoid of anything less than organic produce and soy milk, good for you. (And if you're one of those parents whose kid has never ever tasted fast food ... well, whatever.) But for the rest of us, I'd love to be able to hang up the guilty conscience, allow common sense be our guide and let the kids have a little junk every now and then!
