Organizing Your Home: Cleaning Out Your Closet
How do I get rid of basic clothes, even though I haven't worn them for a while (a long while)? And how do I get rid of nice/expensive clothes/purses? I keep thinking I'll use them again someday.
You're ready to organize your home and your natural instinct is to stuff everything in the closet. Unfortunately, organizing your home involves more than hiding the junk! You've got to be ruthless when it comes to getting rid of things you haven't worn since college.
It's always hard to part with the "what if's" in our closet. But if you haven't worn the basics in a long time, are you sure they are basics to you? Maybe those items just don't fit into the rest of your wardrobe—and if not, recognizing that may make them easier to part with.
Many women make the mistake of hanging on to clothing they haven't fit into in years in hopes that they'll lose that baby weight one day. The truth is that once you are able to fit into these clothes, you'll probably be ready for a fresh wardrobe! There's also no reason to hang on to your old "fat" clothes just in case you pack on a few pounds.
One strategy for truly loved (or costly) items that you haven't found occasion to wear is to give them to a family member or friend—someone who wouldn't mind if you asked to borrow it back at some point!
Donating your clothing to a good cause is also another way to make you feel good about letting go of it. And remember, it's nice to clear space for something new—even if that's just some breathing room in your closet!
You'll be surprised how good you feel about your home once you declutter and get organized. The closet is a great place to start organizing your home!
