Getting Your Child to Help Clean Up

When your playroom starts to look like a tsunami blew through it, it's a good time to start teaching your toddler to help clean up his toys. (His future wife will thank you later.) Here, our top tips:

  • Turn cleanup into a game. Set a timer and see how many toys he can pick up in a minute. Or give him a point for every toy he puts away. Or check out these other awesome cleanup games.

  • Lead by example. Get in there an pick up toys with him. Once he sees how you get things started, he'll be able to do it himself.
  • Be realistic about your expectations. Don't expect the toy box to pass a white glove test, and remember that kids' abilities depende on their age. Set reasonable cleaning expectations for your child, so you're not setting them up for a task that's too big for them.
