Cooking Tips: Keep Cookies Soft

Submitted by alison
Some cookies are meant to be crispy and crunchy, but when you bake a nice soft chewy cookie, the last thing you want is for them to dry out and go to the crispy side. Need tried and true cooking tips for keeping your favorite cookies soft just like they were fresh from the oven? Try these tips for moist chewy yumminess.
  • Before baking, use an oven thermometer to make sure your oven is heating to the proper temperature.
  • While mixing up your batter, add a packet of instant pudding mix. (This clever cooking tip is kinda like two desserts in one!)
  • Substitute margarine or shortening for butter in your recipe, or try adding a little more butter to the recipe.
  • Keep dough chilled until ready to put onto the cookie sheet, and allow the cookie sheet to cool before prepping another batch for the oven. If the dough is too warm, it will spread out more quickly on the sheet and make thinner cookies that will dry out quicker than thicker cookies.
  • Once cookies are in the oven, try turning the oven off a minute or two early or take the cookies out of the oven early, when just the edges are golden brown.
  • After baking, allow cookies to cool and set up, but transfer them to a storage container as soon as possible.
  • Store your cookies in an airtight container along with two slices of bread. This tip works because the bread will dry out, giving up its moisture to the cookies. But be sure to change out the bread every two to three days to prevent mold. That is, if your delicious (and soft!) cookies last that long.
