Basic Hair Care Products Every Mom Should Have
Mom 'do? What to do? While you may squeeze in that three luxurious minutes to shower, you may only have about another three minutes to take care of your hair. Fortunately, you don't need a crate full of hair products to achieve your best look. As with everything mom-related, the best thing to do is to keep it simple. Here's a list of the hair necessities:
- Shampoo. Only use shampoo that works with your hair type. And when you apply it, keep in mind that you only need to use a quarter- to half-dollar-size amount, depending on your length.
- Conditioner. The finer your hair, the less you need to use, and the thicker and coarser, the more you'll need to apply to keep out tangles. Condition at the ends to make brushing easier and protect against split ends.
- Brush or comb. If your hair type is one that requires you brush regularly, invest in a brush with a rubber base and boar's head bristles. If your hair is prone to knots, comb with a wide-tooth comb after shower while hair is still wet and conditioned. And always come from end to root. If you blow dry your hair to style, then invest in a nice barrel brush for smooth curls or straightening.
- Styling serum, mousse or spray. No matter what your hair type, you should find a styling product that works it. If you have thick hair, find a cream or serum that adds moisture, control and shine; for fine hair, use shine sprays that don't weigh it down. Got the frizzies? There's an anti-frizz balm for that. And, if your hair needs a lift, find a volumizing mousse or spray.
- Hair-dryer or diffuser. What? Your hair doesn't dry perfectly by itself? So get yourself a high-watt drier (above 1800) to get your hair styled in time. Driers with nozzles and speed settings to concentrate heat in the right way. If you have curly hair, purchase a diffuser that fits on your hair dryer. Diffusers keep your wave in tact.
- Bonus: flat iron. For those special occasions or just to change up your look. Buy ceramic only, so you only have to press the hair once instead of going over and over. And never use on wet hair. The thicker your hair, the wider the iron should be. But for most types, a 1" iron will do.
