Beauty Product Expiration Dates

Emme's Beauty & Makeup Tips

Just like food that's been sitting out too long, makeup can go bad. Old makeup can acquire bacteria, and that's bad for you. To avoid some nasty infections like pink eye and skin irritations like dermatitis, take a look through your makeup drawer and get rid of any makeup or beauty product that's past its expiration date. OK, so it's not quite like dairy products: You won't find a date on the jar or bottle, so here's a makeup lifespan cheat sheet:

  • Powders and shadows: 1-2 years
  • Cream shadows: 12-18 months
  • Eye and lip pencils: 1 year
  • Lipstick and lipliner: 1 year
  • Cream foundation: 4-6 months
  • Liquid foundation: 3-6 months
  • Mascara and eyeliners: 3 months
  • Makeup brushes: clean weekly using mild detergent
  • Makeup sponges: replace weekly
It may sound like a pain in the you-know-what, and even a waste, to toss out expensive, barely-used cosmetics. But think about it this way: Would you eat moldy fruit? So why do that to your face? Trust me: The 15 minutes you take to dump out your drawer now may save you time (and money!) at the doctor later!

Be true, be you,

Emme
