Urinary Tract Infections During Pregnancy

Most pregnant women feel like they are constantly running back and forth to the toilet. But if you feel a constant urge to urinate (even if you've JUST gone) or you feel a burning sensation when you pee, you could be suffering from a urinary tract infection.

If it turns out that you do, in fact, have a urinary tract infection, your doctor will treat the infection with an antibiotic such as ampicillin, amoxicillin or sulfamethoxazole/trimepthoprim, all of which are thought to be safe during pregnancy. UTIs tend to come back again and again, so you'll need to have your urine checked at regular intervals throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.

You may be able to keep urinary tract infections at bay by consuming one to two cups of cranberry juice each day. Studies have shown that cranberry juice helps reduce the number of bacteria in urine and may actually prevent the bacteria from sticking to cells in the bladder.
